How Do Heat Recovery and Energy Recovery Work?

Heat recovery ventilators (HRVs) and energy recovery ventilators (ERVs) are mechanical ventilation systems designed to protect energy efficiency. They accomplish this goal via heat recovery or energy recovery, depending upon the system. It sounds complex, but it’s actually quite simple. The two types of systems also operate nearly identically. Both HRV systems and ERV systems exchange heat between incoming and outgoing air streams.

It works this way all year long. In the summer, the systems vent the cool, but stale and often dry, air outdoors. This airstream warms the incoming fresh, but hot, air. In the winter, the outgoing air is used to pre–warm the incoming cold, fresh air. The only difference between the two is that ERVs mix the airstreams just enough to balance humidity, too.

We Will Install the Right System in Your Home

Typically, an HRV would be used in homes with high humidity in the winter, and ERVs in those homes with low humidity levels in the winter. However, ERVs are also common in areas that are hot and humid in the summer. Evaluating your home and factors such as insulation properties and air tightness will help our technicians determine which system is best suited to your needs.

If you’ve previously had an HRV system or ERV system installed, and it seems as though it’s not doing its job properly, let us know. It’s possible the system was installed by an unqualified technician, and our comfort specialists can replace it with a more appropriate one. If your system has broken down completely, we’ll have it replaced swiftly and successfully.
