How to Save Money on Energy Bills During the Winter

During the winter utility costs seem to skyrocket. Cold days and nights can make for chilly temps outside and inside your home. We have some strategies to help you save both energy and money while remaining comfortable through the coldest months of the year. With little to no cost, you can implement these tips on a daily basis to save money on energy bills all winter long.

Solar Power

Open your curtains on your south-facing windows during the day. This allows the sunlight to warm up your home naturally. Remember to close them at night to reduce the chill.

Take Cover

Seal out drafts from windows by taping clear plastic film to the inside of the window frames. Make sure the plastic is sealed tightly. There are even kits you can purchase at your local hardware store that seal using a hairdryer. To increase this benefit consider hanging heavier insulating drapes in the winter

Set Your Thermostat

Adjust the temperature of your thermostat to the lowest setting as is comfortable. Additionally, when you retire to bed for the evening, set the temp back 10 degrees. This adjustment could save approximately 10 percent on your heating bills. Consider installing a programmable thermostat to make this automatic.

Seal Up Any Leaks

Add weather-stripping around windows to stop air leaks. Use caulking to seal gaps around doors, windows, chimneys, and recessed lighting. Add insulation and seal unfinished spaces in cupboards and closets. Lastly, seal leaks around utility cut-throughs for piping.

Reduce Heat Loss from the Fireplace

There are ways to both maximize the benefits and reduce the drawbacks of your fireplace during winter.

  • Keep the fireplace damper closed whenever you are not burning a fire.
  • If available, close the doors to the room in which you are using the fireplace to keep heat inside.
  • If you never use your fireplace consider plugging and sealing up the chimney flue.
  • Make sure the seal on your fireplace flue damper is as snug as possible.

Water Heater Settings

Make sure to set your temperature for your water heater to the warm (around 120 degrees) setting. A lower setting not only saves money but reduces the risk of danger and potential harmful burns.

Smart Holiday Lighting

Consider using only LED holiday light strings to reduce the cost of decorating your home during the holiday season. Look for brands and manufacturers that carry the ENERGY STAR certification.

Maintenance is Key

Regularly scheduled HVAC maintenance is the best way to save money on energy bills in the winter. Furthermore, it makes sure your system is in its best shape and will run efficiently all season long. To further increase utility savings, replace filters once a month.
