Basic HVAC System Mechanics

  • source of warmed or cooled air
  • means of distributing the air to the rooms being heated or cooled
  • a control panel used to regulate the system (e.g., thermostat)

Air Flow and Principles

It is likely that your source of warm air, perhaps a furnace, and cool air, like an air conditioner, use the same distribution and control systems. Meaning, if your house has central air, chilly air most likely flows through the same ducts that heat does, and the same thermostat regulates it. When a heating or cooling system malfunctions, one of these three components is usually the culprit.

The basic operating principles for both heating and air conditioning are very similar. Heat always moves from a warm object to a cooler one, and vice versa. Therefore furnaces and heaters put heat into the air to make your home toasty; air conditioners remove heat to make your home chilly.

Different Energy Sources

All HVAC systems burn fuel. Air conditioners typically use electricity. While most home heating systems use pretty much any type including gas, fuel oil and electricity. However, the heat pump is usually an electrically powered climate control unit used both to heat and cool air. In the summer it extracts heat from the air inside your home Conversely, during the winter it pulls the air from outside and uses this heat to warm the air inside.

How Your Furnace Operates

When you turn on your furnace, it consumes the fuel that powers it. As it burns the fuel, it produces heat, which travels to your living areas ducts, pipes, or wires. The warm air then gets blown out of registers, radiators, or heating panels. If your system is an older one, it may use a boiler to store and heat water. The warm water is then circulated through pipes, which radiate heat.

How Your Air Conditioner Works

Electricity powers your air conditioner to cool a gas in its coils to its liquid state. Warm air is pulled into your home and then cooled by contact with the cooling coils. In turn, the chilly air is vented into your rooms through ductwork and out of registers.
